Adam as a type for Christ

In Alonzo Gaskill’s book ‘The Truth About Eden’ he identifies a number of ways in which Adam acts as a type for Christ (I particularly liked 5,6 and 7):

  1. Adam was physically the first man created by God the Father (Moses 3:7). Christ was the firstborn spirit of God the Father (Colossians 1:15)
  2. Adam was created in the Father’s image (Genesis 1:27). Christ was created in the Father’s image (Hebrews 1:3).
  3. Adam and Christ were foreordained (Abraham 3:22-23)
  4. Adam was the head of the human family (D&C 107:55). Christ is the spiritual head of the family of God (Ephesians 4:15)
  5. Adam was a sinless man who chose for the benefit of others to take upon himself sin, and in so doing dies (2 Nephi 2:25). Christ is a sinless man who chose for the benefit of others to take upon Himself sins, and in so doing died. (Mosiah 26:23) Stephen Robinson wrote: ‘The first Adam parallels the state of the second Adam, Christ. For in their respective gardens, Eden and Gethsemane, each had the ability to die if they so chose, but neither was under the necessity of dying’
  6. Adam provided all mankind with a chance at mortal birth and thus eternal life (2 Nephi 2:25). Christ provides all mankind with the chance of spiritual re-birth and eternal life (1 John 5:1,4)
  7. Adam ruled on earth in its paradisaical, Edenic splendour (Genesis 1:26,28). Christ will rule on the earth when it returns to its paradisaical splendour during the Millennium (Articles of Faith 10)
  8. Michael is the ‘first Adam’ (1 Corinthians 15:45). Christ is the ‘last Adam’ (1 Corinthians 15:45)
  9. Adam’s premortal name, Michael, means ‘who is like unto God’. Christ, the premortal Jehovah, is ‘like unto God’  (Abraham 3:24)
  10. According to ancient legend, (The Combat of Adam and Eve Against Satan) while Adam was making a sacrifice he was smitten in his side, causing blood and water to flow out. While Jesus was making his sacrifice on our behalf, He was smitten in His side causing water and blood to flow out (John 19:34)
